Anchorage, Alaska – United States Attorney Karen L. Loeffler announced today that Keith Dewald Kieffer, 48, a resident of Anchorage, Alaska, was sentenced in federal court in Anchorage on April 5, 2012, to 34 months for his conviction of felon in possession of a firearm. This conviction represents Kieffer’s fourth felony conviction.

United States District Court Judge Timothy M. Burgess imposed the sentence on Kieffer.

According to Special Assistant United States Attorney Erin White, who prosecuted the case, Kieffer sold a stolen Smith and Wesson, Model 640, .357 caliber revolver to a buyer on February 3, 2011. At the time, Kieffer was a convicted felon, with prior convictions from the State of Alaska for misconduct involving a controlled substance in the fourth degree, misconduct involving a controlled substance in the second degree and felony failure to appear. Immediately after the sale of this stolen firearm, law enforcement arrested the defendant and found methamphetamine packaged for sale on his person.

In fashioning a sentence, the Court noted the dangerous nature of Kieffer’s activity, as people in the market for a stolen firearm are usually not going to use the firearm for a good purpose. The Court emphasized a need to protect the community and to deter Kieffer and others from committing similar crimes in the future.

Ms. Loeffler commended the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives and the Anchorage Police Department for the investigation leading to the successful prosecution of Kieffer. SAUSA White is a prosecutor in the U.S. Attorney’s Office who is funded by the Municipality of Anchorage for the purpose of prosecuting gang-related and violent crime cases.
